Macdonald’s Plas Talgarth is our home resort but we hadn’t occupied for the past 13 years so were interested to see what, if anything, had changed in that time. Check in was painless although we arrived at about 2pm when official check in isn’t until 5pm. The unit wasn’t available but there is a bar and a comfortable lounge to wait in, and we actually got in shortly before 4pm.
Our apartment, Lapwing 3, has 2 bedrooms both with private bathrooms plus a large convertible bed settee in the main living room. There is an additional shower room on the ground floor. The main bedroom also has a sauna as part of the en-suite bathroom. One bedroom has twin beds and the other has a massive (by UK standards) double bed.
The apartment had been refurbished to a very high standard throughout with 3 leather settees in the living area but still plenty of space to move around. There is also a glass top games table complete with playing cards, chess and backgammon boards plus various other bits and pieces. Colour TV and VCR is provided and there are plans to provide digital TV to all units. The fully fitted kitchen has oven, hob, dishwasher, fridge freezer and microwave oven. The apartment is heated by electric wall heaters and we found these to be very efficient and although electricity is charged for, not expensive to run.
There is a bar and restaurant on site although the bar is closed in the afternoon between 3 and 6pm except on Saturday and Sunday which are the changeover days. Good quality and quantity food is available in both the bar and restaurant with the restaurant having various themed nights throughout the week. We ate in the bar regularly and once in the restaurant. The restaurant food was of very good quality and well presented. The only problem we experienced in the bar was occasional slow service. This was due to only one person working behind the bar, and them being responsible for collecting meals from the kitchen (on the upper floor) and having to clear tables as well as undertaking the normal bar work.
The site is well tended and in generally good repair. The indoor swimming pool was nicely warm and has time set aside for adult only swimming. Not having any children of our own, we considered this a great benefit.
The nearest towns are Aberdovey (6 Miles) and Machynlleth (3 Miles). There is a decent range of shops, pubs etc in Machynlleth and a good beach at Aberdovey. The area is a paradise for walkers as it is on the southern edge of the Snowdonia National Park. There are plenty of other small towns and villages in the area plus “The Little Trains of Wales” and numerous castles. There is certainly no need to be bored, whatever the weather.
Overall we were very pleased with our stay and would give the resort a rating of 8 out of 10.
Plas Talgarth has recently regained its Gold Crown status with RCI.

The resort is roughly in the center of Wales and a day's drive to Harlech, Caernavon, Bodnant Gardens, Powis Castle, Conwy and beautiful drives through Wales.
The resort offered a Welsh Dinner and Men's Chorus program that could not be equalled. The MC was genial and we enjoyed talking to him in the lounge after the program.
There was a nice outdoor pool area for warm season use. Well landscaped and the staff was pleasant although in this historic area we were seldom at the resort.
The nearby town had any needed shopping but we could not pronounce it.
One BR was upstairs with a large bath and the BR downstairs was quite spacious with a full bath. A complete kitchen and a lovely view of trees and pasture off the living room. This was one of our favorites of 17 British timeshares. Very peaceful but close to a town and historic sites.
